50 years of Pronto Software: built on innovation, independence and customer success

In 2026, Pronto Software celebrates 50 years of helping organisations simplify complexity, improve visibility and keep their operations moving with confidence. What began as a small Australian software business has grown into a trusted enterprise technology partner for organisations across Australia and around the world.
Across five decades of constant technology change, one thing has remained consistent: Pronto Software’s commitment to building practical, reliable solutions around the real needs of customers. As an employee-owned, self-funded and fiercely independent Australian business, our decisions have always been guided by long-term value, trusted relationships and a deep understanding of the industries we serve.
As we mark this milestone, we look back at the moments that have shaped Pronto Software’s story, from our early beginnings to the evolution of Pronto Xi, and the people, customers and partners who continue to help define our future.
The origins: innovation from the beginning

Pronto Software’s story began in the 1970s as Prometheus Software Developments (PSD), working alongside local computer manufacturer Computer Manufacturing and Design (CMAD). At the time, business software was still emerging, and the idea of using technology to connect core operations was only beginning to take shape.
Together, the teams developed early systems that gave customers more than hardware alone, they offered a way to better manage business processes. This early focus on solving practical business challenges laid the foundation for what would become Pronto Software’s enduring purpose.
Building momentum through the 1980s
During the 1980s, the business entered an important new phase. After acquiring the software division from CMAD, the Prometheus Software Developments team continued supporting existing customers while reimagining what the software could become.
The team rebuilt the original applications in a new Prometheus programming language, creating a proprietary 4GL programming language and compiler that would later be renamed Pronto. This work marked a major step forward, giving the company greater control over its technology and a stronger platform for future development.
Expanding reach in the 1990s
By the late 1990s, Prometheus Software Developments had grown into a leading provider of business software and implementation services, with well over a hundred staff and hundreds of customer sites using Pronto.
This decade also saw the company broaden its reach through an Authorised Reseller Program, partnering with organisations including Information Synergy, Applied Business Technology, Scope, Velocity and SL Information in Kuala Lumpur. With new partnerships and a growing Queensland presence, Pronto was building the foundations for a wider network of expertise and support.
A defining decade: staff ownership and Pronto Xi
The early 2000s brought one of the most defining moments in Pronto Software’s history. After a period of ownership changes during the dot-com era, the company was again put up for sale. Recognising the strength of the business, its customer base and its people, the CEO at the time worked with the management team to create a prospectus and facilitate a staff buyout.
Soon after, Pronto Xi was launched as the first Australian ERP solution to fully comply with GST regulations. In November 2002, the business rebranded from Prometheus Software Developments to Pronto Software, marking a new chapter for the company and its flagship platform.
Through the 2000s, Pronto Software continued to grow its capabilities. The company established Pronto Cloud to provide cloud computing solutions and services, released Pronto Xi Avenue as its first fully integrated eCommerce platform, and expanded its reseller network into Sri Lanka and Canada.
Growing capability through the 2010s

The 2010s were a period of significant growth and diversification. Pronto Software strengthened its regional presence, formed reseller partnerships in Jakarta and opened its Sri Lanka office to further support product research and development.
The company also expanded its ecosystem of Solution Partners, helping customers extend the value of Pronto Xi through complementary capabilities. A major collaboration during this time included the integration of IBM Cognos 10, strengthening Pronto Xi’s Business Intelligence engine and enhancing visual reporting.
Pronto Software also launched dedicated business divisions including Pronto iQ, focused on business intelligence, reporting and analytics, and Pronto Woven, focused on eCommerce and digital transformation. These capabilities helped customers get more from their data, streamline digital experiences and adapt to changing business needs.
Pronto Software today: trusted, local and future-focused
Today, Pronto Software continues to evolve Pronto Xi to meet the needs of modern businesses. Recent enhancements include a major user interface update, one of the most significant appearance upgrades since 2002, designed to make the platform more intuitive and easier to use.
Our focus remains firmly on supporting the industries we know best, including manufacturing, wholesale and distribution, retail, mining, facility management, and building and construction. As customer needs continue to evolve, Pronto Software is investing in artificial intelligence, automation, analytics and continuous delivery to help businesses access information faster, reduce manual effort and make better decisions with confidence.
Our Solution Partner network has also continued to expand, giving customers access to a broader range of capabilities across areas such as freight management, warehouse hardware, expense management, HR management, lease software, CAD links and payment gateways.
In 2025, Pronto Software was proudly certified as Australian Owned, reinforcing our commitment to supporting Australian businesses with local expertise, tailored ERP and analytics solutions, and long-term partnership.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years
As Pronto Software enters its next 50 years, our purpose remains clear: to help keep businesses running on a rock-solid foundation so they can grow with certainty.
Our future will build on the qualities that have defined us from the beginning. We are Australian owned, employee owned, financially independent and committed to our customers for the long term. This gives us the freedom to invest with purpose, stay close to the businesses we support and make decisions based on lasting value.
Technology will continue to evolve, but our people, local expertise and partnership model will remain central to who we are. We will keep listening, keep learning and keep building solutions that help customers simplify complexity and move forward with confidence.
Fifty years on, Pronto Software’s story is one of resilience, innovation and independence. More importantly, it is a story shaped by the customers, employees and partners who have grown with us. As we celebrate this milestone, we do so with gratitude for the past and excitement for what comes next.
